Began playing tennis at 2 1/2 years old… Plays tennis right-handed but is actually left-handed…Father, Axel and mother, Annie, are both retired…Has one older brother, Eric, who worked for General Electric and Nike, and one older sister, Inga, who teaches German…Enjoys reading, movies and hanging with friends when he is not travelling…Also loves all sorts of sports including basketball and ice hockey…His idol growing up was Andre Agassi…Has no preference on surface but would consider clay his favourite surface… Coached by countryman Dennis Schenk, who travels with him.

2011 -- The top Dutchman finished in Top 50 for 1st time, highlighted by his maiden ATP World Tour title in Kitzbühel (d. Montanes) in August…Became 1st Dutchman to earn an ATP title since Martin Verkerk in Amersfoort in July 2004…It’s 2nd year in a row a Dutchman finished in Top 50 (de Bakker No. 43 in 2010)...Prior to US Open, advanced to SF in Winston-Salem (l. to Benneteau), snapping his career-best 8-match winning streak…He also reached QF in Chennai in 1st week (l. to Wawrinka) and Nice (l. to Hanescu) in May...Played all 4 Grand Slam events for 1st time (6-4 mark), reaching personal-best 3R at Australian Open (l. to Roddick) and Wimbledon (ret.vs. Fish)…All 4 losses came to Top 10 foes…Went 0-7 vs. Top 10...Compiled marks of 13-16 on hard, 11-7 on clay and 3-3 on grass…Earned a career-high $590,708...

2010 -- The No. 2 Dutchman (behind de Bakker) had a breakout year jumping from No. 447 to No. 65 in just a year and was voted ATP Comeback Player of the Year…Finished with season-best five Challenger titles and 32-8 match record, including three in a row (San Marino, Manerbio, Como) for an impressive 16-match winning streak…His best ATP World Tour result was QFs in Basel (l. Djokovic) in November…Earned a career-high $247,039.

2009 -- Underwent another right knee surgery in May 2009 and was out for the first 10 months before playing in two Challengers in November, reaching the SFs in both...Finished year at No. 451...

2008 -- The No. 1 Dutchman won a career-best 14 matches to finish just outside Top 100...Reached four ATP QF and won a Challenger title while compiling a 9-3 mark…In season opener, advanced to QF in Chennai (d. Baghdatis in 1st RD, l. to Cilic)...Then made Australian Open debut as a qualifier, defeating No. 19 Ljubicic for his first Slam win (l. to Grosjean)...In February, reached back-to-back QF in Rotterdam (d. No. 10 Murray in 1st RD, l. to Llodra) and Zagreb (l. to Ancic)...Qualified into AMS events at Indian Wells (l. to Monaco in 2nd) and Miami (l. to Berrer in 1st), and in between won Sunrise Challenger title (d. Grosjean)...Played rain-delayed Sunrise final and first qualification match in Miami on same Monday...One month later, advanced to clay QF at Valencia (d. Safin in 2nd RD, l. to Korolev)...Reached a career-high No. 56 on April 28...Made debut at Roland Garros (l. to Cilic) and Wimbledon (l. to Hewitt in five)....Missed two months with a right knee injury, following surgery in July 2008, then returned for final tournament in September at Ljubljana Challenger where he reached reached SF...Earned a career-high $237,052.

2007 -- The top Dutchman put together a successful season on ATP circuit (13-12 mark) and advancing to his first ATP SF...Also compiled a 17-12 mark in Challenger play with one title...In first three months, won Wolfsburg Challenger title (d. Brands) in Germany and also reached SF at Wrexham Challenger in England...Received a wild card in Rotterdam and reached 2nd RD (d. Karanusic, l. to Youzhny)...Qualified for first ATP Masters Series tournament in Miami and lost to Monaco in 1st RD...Played in 1st RD Davis Cup tie vs. Great Britain and lost to Henman in second rubber before beating J. Murray in dead rubber...In June, won his first ATP grass court match in 's-Hertogenbosch (d. Serra, l. to Benneteau)...One month later, advanced to first ATP SF in Amersfoort (l. to Eschauer)...In August, reached 3rd RD in Washington (l. to Safin) and followed with 2nd RD at AMS Montreal, posting first Top 10 win over No. 10 Berdych before losing in next round to Baghdatis...Made US Open debut as a lucky loser and lost to eventual finalist Djokovic in 1st RD...In September, won both of his singles matches in Davis Cup tie vs. Portugal...Closed season by reaching 2nd RD in Vienna (d. 2006 -- Reached three consecutive finals at Canadian Futures in March, winning title in Rock-Forest (d. Cleveland) in between runner-ups in Laval (l. to Wilson) and Montreal (l. to Kryvonos)...Made first ATP main draw showings as a wild card in 's-Hertogenbosch (l. to Ferrero) and Amersfoort (l. to Coria), losing both in three sets...Made Davis Cup debut vs. Czech Republic in World Group playoff tie and lost to No. 13 Berdych in straight sets and defeated Hernych in dead rubber...Compiled a 21-8 record in Challenger play, winning his first title in Nashville (d. Pless) and advancing to SF at Saransk, St. Petersburg and Como...In doubles, won Louisville Challenger title (w/Sijsling) and Netherlands Futures #3 (w/Coene)...Reached final at Saransk (w/Valtzer) and Brasov (w/M. Navratil) Challengers.

2005 -- Won first pro title at Israel Futures #1 in Jerusalem (d. Valtzer) and SF at two other Futures events...In doubles, captured title at Italy Futures #24 and runner-up at Israel Futures #1 (both w/Sijsling)
