Finished in Top 20 for sixth consecutive year despite playing in only 15 tournaments, his fewest since 1989...Injury problems (ankle and shoulder) limited his activity...Came back from a left ankle injury he suffered in October 1995 and, in his second tournament of year in Antwerp, won title (d. Ivanisevic) without dropping a set...The next week (on Feb. 29) in Milan, he re-injured his left ankle in the locker room just minutes before taking court for a 2nd RD match against Forget...He took a wrong step and ruptured the ligament...Sat out for 10 weeks before returning in Rome in mid-May...After a 2nd RD exit, contemplated whether to play French Open because of lack of preparation...But surprised many by reaching final (l. to Kafelnikov) after wins over defending champion Muster (4th RD), Pioline (QF) and Rosset (SF)...On grass, reached QF at Queen's (l. to Ferreira) and RD 16 at Wimbledon (l. to eventual champ Krajicek)...Suffered shoulder tendinitis during North American summer hardcourt circuit and withdrew from three tournaments...Only played in Los Angeles (1st RD) and U.S. Open (2nd RD) before returning for European indoor season...Struggled with a 5-7 record with best result a QF in Ostrava (l. to Damm)...Went 2-2 vs. Top 10...One of seven players to win at least one title every year in this decade (Agassi, Becker, Chang, Ivanisevic, Muster, Sampras).
