1997 -- Retired from singles competition in June after playing Rosmalen because of knee problems but continued to excel in doubles with countryman Haarhuis...They qualified for The Phoenix/ATP Tour World Doubles Championship for the fifth consecutive year, reaching SF (l. to Leach-Stark)...The duo finished No. 2 in the Team Rankings with six titles in eight finals...Compiled a 14-4 record in Grand Slam play, highlighted by reaching their first Wimbledon final (l. to Woodies) and SF at the Australian and French Opens...Won titles on three surfaces during year - hard (Doha, Boston, Toulouse), carpet (Rotterdam) and grasscourts (Rosmalen), with best clay performance a final at Mercedes Super 9 event in Monte Carlo...Finished No. 4 individually in doubles, his third Top 10 ranking in last five years.

1996 -- In February, retired because of a right knee injury in fifth and decisive Davis Cup match (vs. Mahesh Bhupathi) in India...Did not play for a month, but after coming back to play three tournaments in March, missed nearly three months...Suffered patella tendinitis in both knees...Returned June 10, finishing with 5-13 record...In doubles, he and countryman Haarhuis made a late-season surge to qualify for The Phoenix/ATP Tour World Doubles Championship in Hartford where they finished 1-2 in round-robin play...Reached final in first week of year in Doha and did not play together full-time again until June...Advanced to SF of Atlanta Olympics, losing to rivals Woodbridge-Woodforde 18-16 in third set...Then lost bronze medal match to Goellner-Prinosil...Entered U.S. Open No. 29 in Team Rankings and reached final (l. to Woodies)...After U.S. Open, compiled a 19-6 record...Won in Toulouse and Mercedes Super 9 in Paris while reaching final in Stuttgart (d. Woodies en route in both)...Finished No. 6 in Team Rankings and No. 18 individually in doubles.

1995 -- Finished in Top 50 in singles for second consecutive year...Had QF showings at the Australian Open (d. Muster, l. to Krickstein) and Wimbledon (d. Stich, W. Ferreira, l. to Agassi)...Broke into the Top 20 for first time Jan. 30...Ranked in Top 20 nine weeks...In doubles, he and Haarhuis compiled a 62-19 record with six titles in eight finals, winning the Mercedes Super 9 in Monte Carlo, French Open, Halle, Tokyo-indoor, Essen and Stockholm...Qualified for ATP Tour World Doubles Championship in Eindhoven, advancing to the final before falling to Connell-Galbraith...Finished No. 2 in the Team Rankings and tied at No. 3 individually after gaining No. 1 spot for first time in June.

1994 -- With Haarhuis, won eight titles in 12 finals...Won singles titles in Schenectady (d. C. Adams) and in Kuala Lumpur (d. Olhovskiy)...Also won the doubles in Kuala Lumpur, becoming the lone double winner on Tour...Has won four career titles on as many surfaces (carpet, clay, grass, hard)...In doubles, won the Australian Open, U.S. Open and Mercedes Super 9 stop in Key Biscayne (w/Haarhuis)...Finished No. 2 individually in doubles and No. 1 as a team, compiling a 65-15 record...Lost in the SF of the ATP Tour World Doubles Championship in Jakarta.

1993 -- Beat Sampras and Courier during the year, defeating Sampras en route to his second career title at Atlanta on clay...An outstanding doubles season, winning six titles with Haarhuis, including the World Doubles Championship (d. Woodies) to finish No. 2 in the Team Rankings...Also won in San Francisco (w/S. Davis).

1992 -- Won Manchester (d. Mal Washington) for first Tour singles title, and reached three QF...Won doubles title in Schenectady (w/Haarhuis).

1991 -- QF in Madrid and Newport, and late in the year had an outstanding run in doubles, winning four titles with as many partners.

1990 -- Advanced to SF at Sao Paulo Tour stop, and reached singles and doubles finals (w/Oosting) at Verona Challenger along with three Challenger SF.

1989 -- Reached singles QF and was doubles runner-up at Lagos Challenger (w/Haarhuis).
