Began playing tennis at age five...Born in Sarajevo, as first child to father Nerfid and mother Žaneta. His birth came shortly after outbreak of Bosnian War, in a maternity hospital located near the Zetra Olympic Hall. The arena was destroyed at the time, but it was the same place where Damir would start practicing tennis. He also has a brother, Zlatan (five years younger)...As a kid practiced skiing and played soccer, in addition to tennis...Growing up,admired Patrick Rafter and Roger Federer and he is also a keen fan and supporter of Bosnian soccer team FK Željezničar...In his childhood, acted in two movies – Grbavica (2006), as background actor, and Mörderischer Frieden (2007), where he played major role as Durcan...In addition to his native Bosnian, he speaks English. He has studied political science at the Faculty of Political Science in Sarajevo, at University of Sarajevo...Coached by his father Nerfid, who has been running a tennis school since 1994.
2014 -- The No. 1 Bosnian finished just outside Top 100 at a year-end best No. 109, winning 5 tour-level matches during season...Made Grand Slam debut as a qualifier at Australian Open, reaching 3R with victories over Hajek and Dodig (l. to Berdych). They were his 1st and only tour-level match wins outside of Davis Cup. Fell in the 1R at Roland Garros (l. to F.Lopez) and the US Open (l. to Ferrer). Also qualified at Winston-Salem, losing 1R to Mannarino...Compiled his best results at Challenger level with a 26-15 record, winning 3 clay-court titles - his 1st at that level – in Mersin, Turkey in April (d. Riba), Arad, Romania in June (d. Riba) and San Benedetto, Italy in July (d. Haider-Maurer)...
2013 -- Won three Futures titles (Croatia #1, Bulgaria #1, Croatia #12) and runner-up in two others (Bosnia #4, Serbia #3). Reached Challenger finals at Kosice as a qualifer (l. to Kukushkin) in June and Poznan (l. to Haider-Maurer) in July...
2012 -- Won five Futures titles (Turkey #4, Italy #2, Bosnia #1, Bosnia #3, Bosnia #5) and SF at Kosice Challenger...
2011 -- Won four Futures titles (Bosnia #3, Croatia #8, Croatia #14, Turkey #32) and runner-up at Bosnia #2...
2010 -- Won bronze medal in singles event at Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore, where he was a flag bearer for Bosnia and Herzegovina in opening ceremonies. That year he appeared in his only three junior Grand Slam events: 2R at Roland Garros, QF at Wimbledon and 3R at US Open. Ranked as high as No. 3 in world juinor rankings in July before finishing No. 4...
